FRED WULF, Director of Operations, Healthcare Services for EXTEND Resources, is an accomplished operations and quality management leader with more than forty years of experience in healthcare services delivery and health information management. He leads EXTEND’s healthcare operations, ensuring high-quality, sustainable service delivery and consistent customer satisfaction.
Fred brings a wealth of healthcare revenue cycle knowledge and expertise to EXTEND’s clients. Before joining EXTEND, Fred shared his insights as a medical coding consultant, helping healthcare services organizations across the globe – and their clients – improve quality, compliance, and financial outcomes. Before becoming a consultant, he led operations, training, and compliance initiatives for several national (revenue cycle) consulting firms as well as academic and other health systems in a variety of roles, including:
- HIM Director in Data Quality, Coding, and Daily Operations,
- ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer,
- MS-DRG/DRG/APC Auditor,
- Coding Compliance Coordinator, and
- Clinical Documentation Manager and Trainer.
Fred has provided exemplary on-site and remote coding support and management for Cedars Sinai, HCA, and multiple consulting companies. He has also successfully managed pharmacy utilization/billing audits and physician audits by The Joint Commission.
With six years of off-shore operations and training experience, Fred has a passion for working with clinicians and medical professionals in the Philippines to develop the coding and CDI skills, quality, and productivity levels clients desire. Throughout his career, he has trained and retained more than 500 coders and 40 clinical documentation reviewers in both the Philippines and in India. Fred continues to train, mentor, and manage medical coders, auditors, and clinical documentation specialists in both coding and clinical documentation integrity excellence. He led the organization of the AHIMA World Conference (AWC) in the Philippines in September 2016 and served as AHIMA board member from 2016-2017.
Fred served as a U.S. Navy corpsman, completing corps school 1975 and receiving Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) credentials, Fleet Marine School 1975, Pharmacy Tech School and advanced jungle medical training in 1976, and served as a medic for the Navy and Marines at multiple duty stations around the globe until medically retired in 1987.
After his military career, Fred achieved Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification in 1993 and received an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Management from Florida State College in 1994. He was later awarded a Case Management Certificate in 1998 and received certification as a Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) in 2011. Fred also earned the title of AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer in 2011.
